For the next six weeks, in what he’s calling his “6x6 series,” my buddy Judd Wasserman is releasing six albums of original material. Judd’s first release is entitled, A Fume And A Prayer, and I’m happy to have played on it! You can check the tracks out at juddwasserman.bandcamp.com.

Sail Away

Recently, a good friend and teacher of mine left the rainy NW for just a little more sun.

Denney Goodhew is known to Seattle long-timers as a peerless musician—one of his nicknames is Denney Goodnotes. People newer to the region didn’t really have the opportunity to hear him, due to dwindling venues, as well as what appeared to be a diminishing appetite for live performance. Those that knew Denney from their time at Cornish College of the Arts found him to be an incredible teacher.

I’m presenting a few of Denney’s songs, with the hope that those who haven’t previously been able to can now have a taste of his compositional and musical talents.————-
The Stranger—performed by Michael Schiefel, a former student of Denney’s. I believe this song is utilizing a completely made-up language.

Trust In Me—performed by Julie Wolf (lyrics are also Denney’s—Hans Teuber plays sax on this track).

[unknown title]—performed by the Reputations (taken from a recording of one of the Reps’ Scarlet Tree performances). I don’t know who wrote this, however it showcases Denney soloing in an R&B context.

Stridge—part of a collection of material for film, performed by Denney.

Sax Duet—Taken from the ECM album, First Ave, both parts performed by Denney (echo by Manfred).

Language of the Moment

...one step closer to recording an album of my newest tunes. This song, this Prayer for Japan was recorded recently in a demo session. Great players playing greatly have given me good ideas for what to do next with this and other songs that were recorded then.

Please enjoy this rough draft of a song and look to the future (if there is indeed one), when I will have something more complete to offer.

(thank you, Marc Fendel, Eric Verlinde, Gregg Belisle-Chi, Chris Symer and Jason Gray.)

Lots going on right now. Recording with Kristin Chambers, who is releasing an EP in the near future. Great band and great songs. Also, I’m super-stoked to have just recorded demos of my new material. This is the first step towards recording a second album, which will hopefully be in the not-too-distant future. I have a lot of new songs that I’d like to get out before they become old!

This piece—the arrangement of which is presented here being commissioned by Jim Knapp for the now-defunct Jim Knapp Orchestra—was written during the period of dark moving to light. I thought, however, that it would be fitting to bring it back into play for the season during which we move from light to dark. Hot cocoa, slippers and the like are on the way. . . . Let us be thankful for what we have, and let us hold others in a positive light during this season.
